Towers have always stood as symbols of civic pride and Weehawken's Water Tower is one of the most unique and visible in the metro area. Standing 175 feet tall, with its apex 300 feet above sea level, the Tower was built in 1883 by the Hackensack Water Company to supply gravity fed water to residents of Union City, Weehawken and Hoboken. The 1883 structure housed a 165,000 gallon water tank as well as four stories of office space.

Designed by the noted architect Frederick Clarke Withers, the Tower is modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. The Tower's design was recognized by many professional journals when it was built and it is currently listed on the the State and Federal Registers of Historic Places.

For over 100 years, the Tower was privately owned. In 2000, it was threatened with demolition and the Township sprang into action, assuming ownership and forming the Water Tower Preservation Committee to oversee the care and restoration of this famous Weehawken landmark.
